What is Ledger? A Basic Definition
A set of books within which double-entry bookkeeping is maintained. Originally, there was a single ledger, but this rapidly became unmanageable and was divided into the General Ledger and subsidiary ledgers, each of which was summarised in the General Ledger. Subsidiary ledgers include the Sales and Purchase Ledgers and the Cashbook.
